Project summary

  1. Running a capacity-building program for African animal advocates to help advocates start their own projects including Operations, Intervention selection, Research, Communications, EA Training as well as providing seed funding via re-granting.

  2. More broadly signal boosting the African animal movement and trying to further international stakeholder and African stakeholder engagement, build funding, talent and resource infrastructure.

  3. Do check out more details and information on our website, the above is a rather broad summary: https://www.animaladvocacyafrica.org/.

  4. Our 2023 Review and 2024 Plans.

What are this project's goals? How will you achieve them?

  1. Mitigate and prevent factory farming in Africa

    1. Via our training program which helps individuals start their own animal advocacy organisations, directly working on factory farming on the ground.

    2. Research on the most effective and promising interventions

  2. Build the African Animal Advocacy movement

    1. Inform International stakeholders and funders via research, conferences, presentations and talks.

    2. To foster inter-African relations between groups and individuals, we have contributed to setting up an African channel on Hive as well as an alumni group from our program we hope to bolster these as we iterate through our program.

How will this funding be used?

Specifically, it would be great for this funding to go 100% towards regranting to new African advocacy projects coming out of our program.

Who is on your team? What's your track record on similar projects?

https://www.animaladvocacyafrica.org/team

Our team is an excellent group of passionate animal advocates and EA's. 2 Charity Entrepreneurship Incubatees, one AIM research program fellow and an incredible project co-ordinator.

You can check out our progress here - https://www.animaladvocacyafrica.org/our-progress

What are the most likely causes and outcomes if this project fails?

Causes - The training program doesn't help advocates enough, we don't raise enough money for regranting, and the outgoing projects from our program fail

Outcomes - There is little resistance to Factory farming in Africa, as the economy and populace grows, factory farming becomes displaced from US/EU to Africa and Asia.

What other funding are you or your project getting?

We are Funded by ACE, EA Funds, Craigslist and HNWI's, a lot of this covers our operational costs and overheads, but there is still a lot of (IMO) counterfactual impact to be gained from donating directly to regrant to our outgoing projects from the program.

Progress update

What progress have you made since your last update?

In November 2024, we began our second Fundamentals Programme cohort, accepting 19 participants out of over 400 applicants. This programme ran until January 2025, providing participants with the knowledge and skills for effective animal advocacy. Overall, the programme was a success and received positive feedback from participants. Participants rated all programme components and weeks as “very valuable” and “extremely valuable” in our end-of-programme survey, and indicated improvements in their knowledge, skills, motivation, and network to help farmed animals in Africa.

Currently, 10 of these participants are completing the Advanced Programme, running from February to April 2025. They are developing detailed plans for new and impactful animal advocacy projects across seven African countries, including:

  • Improving water quality on tilapia farms in Ghana

  • Addressing JBS's $2.5 million expansion plan to establish six new factory farms in Nigeria

  • Advocating for improved animal welfare legislation in Kenya and Ethiopia

  • Advancing cage-free initiatives through radio campaigns in Nigeria and corporate outreach in Zimbabwe

  • Collaborating with farmers to improve the welfare of chickens in Namibia

  • Increasing the accessibility of alternative proteins in Zimbabwe

What are your next steps?

The Advanced Programme is nearing its end. Participants are required to submit their final project plans by the end of this month. Afterwards, we’ll decide which projects will receive seed funding, supported in part by grants from Manifund and other sources.

Is there anything others could help you with?

To keep our training programme running, we’ve begun fundraising to close the gap in our 2026 budget:

  • $160,000 for general programme expenses, including research, outreach, operations, and travel

  • $20,000 for participant stipends,

  • $90,000 for grants to promising initiatives, both to seed new projects and to help launched projects overcome funding constraints.

We welcome additional financial support from partners and donors. In addition, we’re beginning some exploratory work to map out high-impact career paths in Africa beyond working at animal advocacy nonprofits and nonprofit entrepreneurship. Our goal is to identify opportunities that could significantly improve farmed animal welfare and help mitigate the rise of industrial animal agriculture. If you have any ideas, feedback, connections to experts or support that you think we should be aware of, please let us know!

Animal advocacy work in Africa is particularly neglected, and I'm glad that a cross-country movement building organizations like Animal Advocacy Africa exists. Although the work seems extremely challenging, I expect that the impact per dollar is particularly high given that there are so few organizations doing this work and given that factory farming is probably expected to increase significantly in Africa in the coming decades.

Thank you very much for your important work in neglected regions! I'm a huge fan of your organization and whenever I talk to animal advocates from Africa, AAA is one of the first things that comes up.
All the best with all of you future projects!

I think Africa belongs to the strongly neglected regions in terms of animal advocacy. So it's crucial to have organisations like AAA to support a movement there. AAA has a clear strategy and their team is very competent and ambitious!
