The Effective Altruism Bayero University Group (EA BUK) has been actively engaging students on campus through various initiatives such as book reading discussions, introductory fellowships, and impactful conversations about how to use their careers and resources to do the most good.
We have organized regular book reading and discussion sessions.
Currently, we are running both an Intro Fellowship and a book reading on "Doing Good Better."
The group is led by four organizers, who are also students, dedicating 20 weeks of weekly work throughout the year.
These activities and programs provide students with a deep understanding of EA principles and help develop a community of like-minded individuals committed to creating positive global change.
We are seeking funding to support the work of the four organizers. Each organizer commits 20 weeks of weekly work over the course of a year, dedicating significant time to running the group's activities alongside their academic commitments. Financial stress is a concern, and we aim to provide compensation at a rate of $8 per hour, equivalent to 100 hours of work for the year.
Continue running EA-focused events, including book readings and fellowships, to introduce and deepen engagement with EA concepts.
Build a robust EA community on campus through regular interaction and organizing events that align with our mission.
Provide organizers with financial support to ensure sustainability and reduce burnout while maintaining high-quality programming.
We will achieve these goals by continuing our successful programs and engaging new participants, utilizing feedback from previous activities to optimize the experience.
The funding will be primarily used to compensate organizers for the time and effort dedicated to planning, executing, and managing weekly EA BUK activities. This will help us maintain a high standard of operations and allow the organizers to focus on both personal development and community-building without financial concerns.
Funding Goal (USD):
Our full funding goal is $800, with a minimum funding goal of $500.
Explanation:
If the full funding goal of $800 is met, we will be able to provide more consistent financial support to all four organizers for their work over the course of the year, enabling them to dedicate significant time to running activities without financial strain. This includes compensating them for around 100 hours of work throughout the year, allowing them to focus on both operational and personal development.
However, if only the minimum funding goal of $500 is met, we will still be able to support the group activities, although with reduced compensation for the organizers. This may affect the overall time commitment and level of engagement they can afford, but it will still allow us to run our core programs, including the Intro Fellowship and book reading discussions.
Our team includes four dedicated organizers who have been running activities successfully over the past year.
Mubarak Adewumi Adebayo, the Group Organizer, has a track record of organizing successful EA events, book readings, and fellowships on campus.
We have hosted consistent discussions and are currently running an Intro Fellowship, along with another book reading group concurrently.
The team’s dedication and commitment have grown the group significantly, making EA BUK an important platform for introducing effective altruism to students at Bayero University, Kano.
The most significant risk is the inability to provide financial compensation to the organizers, which could lead to burnout and reduced commitment to organizing activities. If the project fails, EA BUK may struggle to maintain its current activity levels, potentially reducing the group's impact and engagement on campus.
We have not raised any external funds specifically to compensate organizers. Our group activities are currently funded by the Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA), which supports program costs but does not provide financial compensation for the organizers.
