Project summary

I'm co-hosting a "rabbitholeathon," like a hackathon but for learning instead of building, next Thursday. Arcadia generously agreed to give us the venue for free, but it seems like food costs might end up above $1000, which feels like a lot to us as college students. We're fully prepared to fund it ourselves (perhaps with some help from parents) — we did offer it after all — but figured that if anyone got the warm fuzzies from "sponsoring" an event like this, it would be a win-win!

Partiful: https://partiful.com/e/6doiCVXLQ0yiBYjtml6H

At Arcadia, Berkeley, on Thursday, January 2nd!

What are this project's goals? How will you achieve them?

Fostering intellectual curiosity & connections between people in the community.

Saul Munn says about running events that "food matters WAY more than you think it does ... people don’t enjoy themselves when they’re hungry. they’re cranky, they get more upset, they don’t have patience, etc."

How will this funding be used?

We will be purchasing lunch, dinner, and snacks for attendees. We will be trying to make the food high-quality, high-ROI, and themed!

Who is on your team? What's your track record on similar projects?

Me and Rebecca Wang. I've run an elaborate puzzle hunt party and she has run an Alexandr Wang lookalike contest, among other well-reviewed events!

What are the most likely causes and outcomes if this project fails?

People don't vibe with activities and wasted a few hours of their day...

How much money have you raised in the last 12 months, and from where?

None

Again, to be clear, there is absolutely no expectation for anyone to contribute. We are happy to offer the food and would be fully prepared to self-fund. But if it would make you happy to "sponsor" the event, that'd be wonderful!

Final report

Description of subprojects and results, including major changes from the original proposal

The event went well! Ended up only being around ~25 people despite ~50 going + ~50 maybe rsvps on partiful, so not as much funding was necessary, but it was still great to have, and I think this allowed the event to feel more cohesive and manageable.

Spending breakdown

approx budget breakdown: $120 bagels, $100 snacks, $50 drinks, $150 dinner, plus some supplies donated by my household

donated $500

This seems cool! I'm not super likely to be able to make it given travel to Berkeley, but I like the concept and trust that Jacob & Rebecca will do a great job running it, so am happy to sponsor from my "warm fuzzies" budget (slash strategic sponsorship budget -- @Conflux would be obliged if you can plug Manifund & Manifest when you get a chance!)
