Make forecasting fun again

Project description

It’s easy to get stuck in “super serious forecaster mode” but so much can be done to make forecasting feel less like a chore and more like a fun, dynamic technology with a lively community.

My proposal is to devise and execute a series of fun, visible or viral engagement projects that can be layered on top of Metaculus, Manifold and other forecasting platforms. As a community, we’ll use Manifold’s platform to source and vote on project ideas, and then we’ll execute the chosen ideas. It’s difficult to expand this pitch much further without knowing which projects will ultimately be selected, but here are examples of projects that might be considered “fun”:

-       Fund and share a series of ‘Cameos’ (https://www.cameo.com) of celebrities making predictions on questions to be determined.

-       Host a "Reaffirm Day” to encourage people to revisit older predictions.

-       Fund non-monetary prizes for tournament participants or winners. Could be as simple as t-shirts or hats or a trophy, whatever encourages bragging rights or virality.

-       Commission an artist to make a forecasting-themed mural in the Bay area.

-       Curate a forecasting-powered treasure hunt experience.

-       Challenge a well-known public intellectual or celebrity to co-write a fortified essay on Metaculus.

-       EDIT: Go to conferences with SMEs, get them to do real-time predictions.

-       You get the idea.

What is your track record on similar projects?

I’ve written five fortified essays for Metaculus and use various forecasting platforms. I’ve also run a myriad of contests over the past decade, including an annual predictions contest for family/friends and most recently a World Cup contest. This kind of thing isn’t an aberration for me: in 2008, I self-funded a trivia tournament on Facebook. People have told me that these events were “fun” thanks to my curation/guidance. Beyond that, I have a decade of fancy project management experience that probably counts for something. Community engagement has always been part of my professional work.

Please note that I plan to serve primarily as a facilitator were this to be funded. This as an opportunity to collaborate with the forecasting community and to enable others to get creative.

How will you spend your funding?

I’m asking for $4,000 because that should be enough money to fund at least a few moderately ambitious projects. 100% of funding will go towards project-specific expenses (paying for collaborators’ time, prizes, etc.) Thanks for your consideration!

An example of what feels off: Metaculus is currently running a climate tournament (which is great!). I'm an ideal participant for this, I've worked in climate for almost a decade, I like forecasting + Metaculus, they're offering money! But it feels... boring. I can't find it within myself to commit a few hours even though I genuinely find the topic interesting.

What can we do to increase engagement on this tournament? Short of adding a lot more $$, we have to figure out a way to make it fun or competitive. Did anyone actually ask the climate community what would spur them to participate? This is the type of work I want to do with this project.

@Austin I agree, Manifold has brought much needed levity to the community! Some clarifications:

  • Impact: My goal is to make forecasting feel fun. While we can measure some impact in terms of community engagement/impressions/etc, this project is about prospecting for creative ideas that create buzz. When the judges assess impact in September, they should ask whether this project made a splash within the community or in wider culture. How wonderfully vague :) I'd literally create a Manifold question on this, something like "Does the forecasting community feel more "fun" thanks to this project?"

  • Audience: In general, the audience I'm aiming for is more casual than a Metaculus power user. I want to connect with people like me, who enjoy forecasting but not enough to constantly update predictions, and I want to connect with people with very little exposure to forecasting but would enjoy it if someone (us) found the right angle. My family/friends keep asking me to create more ways for them to [casually] forecast, so I know there's demand here.

The more I talk about it, the more I think forecasting could use at least a few casual brands -- we need ways to engage casual users, which will also bring in more power users. This project is a way to potentially create one of those brands.

Hi Samuel, it's cool to see your commitment to making forecasting fun -- a big part of what I think has made Manifold succeed is an emphasis on ease of use and levity~

A couple questions:

  • What does your ideal participant look like? Can you point to a few examples of people who are already excited to participate in this?

  • What kind of impact are you hoping to have, as a result of running these fun events?
